This is a series that has gained a lot of attention, winning multiple Hugo, Nebula and Locus awards.
When I first heard about it a few years ago, it just didn't appeal to me, as I really couldn't imagine reading from a robot or AI's POV. I was adding it to the Speculative Fiction wiki which is what reminded me about it and I've been having problems finding anything interesting so I tried a sample and was hooked. They are all on KU which was an important factor because if it turned out that I hated it, it wouldn't cost me anything. And they are all Novella length except for one book length, #5 entry.
First off, Murderbot isn't a robot, but a constructed cyborg, maybe?. Created from cloned human organics and robotic parts and it is Gender neutral as in does not have any gender identity, so "it" is appropriate and used throughout the series. and not even a hint of romance ( @Puffin74656 ) 😉.
The series could be considered a space opera, it has many of those elements to them, also a mystery and plenty of action, but to me it was foremost a character driven series. Murderbot, which is it's secret name for it's self, is a Securitybot, created to be rented out to various groups to act as expert security, the beginning of the series ( All Systems Red (The Murderbot Diaries 1) ) it is rented out to this group from a "free" planet and they end up by becoming Murderbot's friends, which he has never had before and they are always asking him about his feelings, which is just hilarious. He does have feelings but no one has ever asked him about them before.
