Clans[]

History[]

With the break down of portal technology, Beta Sector created the clans and alliance system to group similar skills together with the intention of passing the training on down through the generations.

To help provide food for their clans, each clan had an attached farm. After the new portals reconnected the planets, the farms were not as critical, but each clan continued to maintain either a farm, a park or gardens.

The highest level of clans are referred to as "gentes maiores" which is from Latin meaning major families (or something like that). The Gentes Maiores consisted of the founding families of Zeus, except for the Tell clan. Tellon Blaze was originally from a clan of the middle rank, the Blaze clan, but after Thetis Beta Sector granted him the right to found a clan of the gentes maiores on Zeus and built him a magnificent clan house.

Society[]

The clans all belong to an alliance centered around politics or business interests and which cross the social divides. The clans are either highest/gentes maiores, middle rank, or plebeian clan/clan clusters. Lia and Mack from the Earth Girl trilogy are from a clan cluster of the lowest rank.

Alliances[]

Alliances are groups of clans that specialize in similar skills and abilities. They are formed of clans of multiple ranks[10].

Military Alliance[]

The Military Alliance is headed by the Tell clan but includes other clans from different ranks mostly middle clans. Two of the original four Military clans are March and Bran.

August Alliance[]

"The Military alliance and the August alliance banners haven't been united since . . ."

–Mack, [11]

The Fifty[]

Fifty alliances are headed by clans of the gentes maiores, which is the majority of the alliances; their representatives are collectively called "the Fifty"[7]. Likewise, their banners are called the "banners of the Fifty" or the "banners of Beta sector"

The Fifty play an important ceremonial role in Beta sector. It is traditional to invite the banners of all of the alliances for major events such as alliance mergers. But individual clans can invite the "banners of the Fifty" to witness exceptional circumstances. Furthermore, causing delays to an event which the Fifty are invited to would be an insult to the Fifty, and thus all the highest ranking clans. {{Quote|"Custom dictates the Fifty can't refuse the invitation of a fellow clan of the gentes maiores, so they'll all send representatives."[7]} The Fifty also have a legal role in Beta sector. If an attack happens when the banners of the fifty are present, it would be an act of war against Beta sector[7]

Factions[]

Factions seem to be the top-level political, or possibly business, associations in Beta sector. All Betan clans belong to a clan of the gentes maiores's faction.[7]

Reactionary Faction[]

There have been a few mentions of a "Reactionary Faction", but little actual information. By the few statements about them, they are extremely conservative and limit the role that women can play in their clans. The August clan seems to be their primary leader.

"...Your reference to reactionary attitudes to women is, at a minimum, inappropriate. Given reactionary views on women holding positions of authority in clans, it could even be regarded as insulting to the female members of alliance council.”[12]
"...faced with a split between August and Fabian, the rest of the reactionary faction will either vote with August or abstain."[13]

Traditions[]

When a new clan is formed and approved, the heralds cry their name to the four wind on their home planet.[3]
